The Importance and Effects of Filters in a Photograph

The term “Filter” can be defined in two different ways based on the duration of your attachment in the specific arena. The common belief is that filters are another choice with Photoshop, whereas this is not true. Even before the computers were invented and Photoshop was introduced, the filtered affect was created using small glass discs. With this affect, a picture can be sharpened or blurred and the UV rays can also be blocked out, and this process filtering comes in handy for picture corrections and to give it a different view.

When we discuss about the filters using which the images can be blurred, we can take the example of a waterfall, it is noticed that a cloud is formed towards the bottom. A filter can be added to show this cloud in the image, as it is not possible to capture the cloud on the camera, because not everything which is visible to naked eye is visible to the camera. Many times these filters can also be added to present the small water drops if they have a higher resolution, and you can present what you see through your eyes using the filters on the lens of the camera.

Another type of filter is the UV protector which is efficient in guarding against these rays. When you are using this filter, you would be required to use a polarizer, which is required while taking pictures in sunlight or any other lights. This is beneficial in balancing the image and it does not look washed out. If the image tends to present something more than that is required, it appears to wash out the effects. Such filters aren’t available in many choices if you use Photoshop, but in comparison, these are easily available for cameras, though they still posses a few factors which you need to use for your pictures.

You may have tried creating the star effects while shooting pictures of the light passing through tree, such an effect is comfortably possible using filters for creating star effects. The light is passed through a number of lines, which are etched into the filter, and the light is streaked outwards to form the shape of a star.

In some cases, the filters have proved to be helpful in creating field depths and focal points. A good example of such a filter is the mist/fog filter, which lets a flicker or glow of lights in a picture. The field of photography is quite exciting and you will have to use the proper tools and resources to enhance your skills and present professional and quality pictures, and use of filters can be quite helpful in creating the effects. Below are some more filters commonly used:

Lenses are available for correcting the effects of colors in a photograph. For instance the sky may be too blue, so you can opt for a filter which will subtle down the brightness of the sky color. Similarly, for underwater pictures, you can make use of filters which let you present natural colors. But in case of underwater images, they tend to present a reddish tinge to all colors, as not much color spectrum is available. So you can make use of related filters to present a natural look which present the original color of the life underwater, in the images you shoot.

The filters used in photography have proved to be great in providing special effects in an image and also helped in enhancing the effect on the image by controlled effects of the color over the picture. A lot of useful tools, resources and equipment are available for shooting images and enhancing your skills, making the art more fun filled and exciting. Even if you take it as a hobby, you can explore the creative self within you.
