Digital Zoom and Optical Zoom

The digital cameras are available in both the varieties: digital zoom and optical zoom. Many people who are not aware of the differences tend to get confused while they are planning to purchase a digital camera.

The optical zooms are highly recognized for maintaining the picture quality and work in a similar fashion to the lens used in a camera of 35 mm films. The length of the lens changes and makes the object appear closer. Whereas, in case of the digital zoom cameras, the images are clicked by the camera, and further cropped, which makes the object look larger. This may deeply affect the picture quality at times.

The resultant image might appear to be larger but the resolution is not as clear as it should be and this often blurs the images leaving unfocused images, as the minute details which sharpen the quality are lost in the process. So, it is always suggested to keep this feature turned off and will help you in restricting automatic zooming at closer angles and maintain the focus on the image.

There are a few measures you can take to maintain the picture quality and still take a closer shot of the image. If you just keep your self a couple of feet away from the object to be shot, and then take the picture, it will give you a clear, large and quality image as a result. Another step you can take is to capture the image at the highest size of the file, which we present you with a larger picture which can be further cropped as per your requirement, maintaining the quality and the clarity of the image.

In case your only requirement is to upload the photographs online, to be forwarded via emails or posted online on the photo galleries, the digital zoom is quite sufficient, as online pictures still appear to be clear if viewed over the net. In case you want to print the images, it is always suggested to use digital cameras which have an optimized optical zoom and the digital zoom should be turned off. This would result in high quality pictures even if they are not closely shot.
